AtomEco’2013 Participants Visit FGUP Radon

Third day of AtomEco’2013 7th International Forum completed with a technical tour of NPK FGUP RADON, one of the largest nuclear power waste management companies.

The technical tour was attended by some sixty Russian and foreign representatives of nuclear power sector companies, and representatives of Russian and foreign press.

Petr Pavlovich Neveykin, General Director of the enterprise, told the participants in detail about the enterprise and its activities: collection, transportation, processing and storage of radioactive waste. Annually the enterprise processes more than 3,000 cubic meters of radioactive waste. RADON is also responsible for monitoring radiation and mercury content indicators in Moscow and Moscow Region. The radiation safety in the region is being monitored by ASCRO (an automated system of radiation safety management).

The visitors then toured the enterprise and looked at radioactive waste management equipment in the main technological facility. They viewed the process of burning flammable radioactive waste, vitrification of liquid radioactive waste, and thermochemical plasma processing. After that the visitors studied the process of dealing with IRS (ionizing radiation sources) on MIK-1, a special device that immobilizes the used IRSs. The visitors also stopped by the radioactive waste sorting and fragmentation station and other units of the enterprise.

The participants of the technical tour said they were very much impressed with the technologies used at FGUP RADON. They noted not only the technological innovations used at the company but also the fact that new scientific projects at the enterprise were carried out by young scholars.
